Most of the days have been a combination of sun, wind, clouds and/or rain. Today is windy and overcast with an earlier rain. We were up before our daily wake up call - the resident rooster in the grove of pine trees behind our RV. Almost every morning he starts crowing around 0500. That's when I hear him, but one night he started around 0200.
He and his hen were not here last year. Rumor has it that the powers-that-be that run this place want the rooster to stay. The hen started out with four chicks, but is down to one. Also residing in the RV park is a family of ospreys nesting in the satellite tower. Vultures have been flying around as well. Probably these two species are the reason for the decreasing chick population.
Another local RV park resident surprised me as I was crossing a street to walk home from the base commissary. He Was BIG!!! And I did not get too close. Last year we saw green iguanas but I'd never seen an orange one. Are they indigenous to the island? No. They are running around Florida like the boa constrictors thanks to people who tire of their pets and let them lose to be fruitful and multiply.
This morning I decided to eat the grapefruit that we picked off a tree in the RV park in Bushnell. We ate one of the oranges and it was sweet. Even though the grapefruit was au natural on the outside (not like the shiny, clean ones in the store), the fruit was delicious on the inside. I knew my Pampered Chef grapefruit section knife would come in handy one day.
We drove into the Old Town or downtown area to Cole's Peace-a restaurant items-bakery-sandwich place. One day Hubby found this place on one of his bike rides, took me there on one of our bike rides through town and got cookies - double chocolate chip and chocolate chip & pecan. He has been smitten by a new toy in that place - the Big Green Egg ceramic grills. Yesterday he stopped and chatted with the chef who was outside cooking pork roast and steaks. We went back today because the chef was going to be roasting turkeys.
I did order a Cuban sandwich (pork with some fixings) but the roast turkeys will be for sandwiches on Monday. They close early on Saturday and all day Sunday. We will be back for a hot roasted turkey sandwich to go.
We've put on our snowbird coats and headed south for warmer weather in Key West, Florida. This time we are traveling the west coast of the state taking in the sights. We stopped for the day in Sarasota to visit the Ringling Museum of Art and Ca' d'Zan mansion. If you are thinking "the circus man, that Ringling?", you are right. The grounds include the mansion, the art museum, the circus museums, the gardens, theater and educational center.
Enjoy the photos.
Hubby and I have been traveling the USA and a bit into Canada in Miss Winnie, our RV since 2006. We have also toured China, some of Europe, a bit of Northern Africa and Israel. To read about most of those journeys, go to www.rocksontheroad-racquelrhodes.blogspot.com.
