On the way to Seward, we stopped in Cooper Landing to fish for salmon on the Kenai River with a guide. It was well worth it because he taught us how to fly fish for salmon. Once we got to a good spot, the fish were just flopping out of the water, but not taking our bait. After several moves on the river, we stopped in a shady area. The fish were jumping, and one took my bait. It took about 15 minutes to get it into the net and on the boat.
When we returned to the base camping store, our guide filleted and packaged the salmon - a sockeye or red salmon. He said it was about 8-9 lb. fish. That is a pretty red fish!
In the photo below, the fish behind us is the entire catch. From our portion, we got about 47 lb. of halibut, lin cod and yellow-eyed rockfish. That big halibut was caught by one of the other guys.
Going from left to right, the wide, white fish are halibut. Next is a dark fish - lin cod. The orangish fish is the yellow-eyed rockfish. Then a salmon and a lin cod. We'll take a day off and then do another charter catching more of the same.
