What's so special about Avery Island? It is a massive salt dome that was used by the Native Americans and was mined during the Civil War by the Confederate Army, but this place is well known for something else.
This is where the infamous, world-famous, Granddaddy of Them All, McIlhenney's Original Tabasco Red Pepper Sauce is made. Back in the day we just called it hot sauce. It's still made the same way and still aged in oak barrels.
We took the short walking tour, only the production line was shut down and I can't recall why. We also did the self-guided drive tour through the island.
Check out their website for more information about their other tours, cooking classes for all the foodies and the history. We just did the minimum since we had an hour plus drive back to the RV park...and it was hot....and humid. Enjoy.
